Our industry has faced considerable challenges over the years, but in recent years the campaign for "environmentally sustainable" sources of fuel and energy have come to the foreground while various industry supported military and legislative actions have been given sour treatments in the press. This is combined with a sizeable cultural shift away from the corporate loyalties cultivated in previous generations of consumers. We are now operating in a superstitious distrustful post-Enron consumer climate: A climate that could quickly turn hostile to ExxonMobil's profit demands. To put it bluntly, consumer - corporate trust may be tapped out; due in no small part to the efforts of idealistic do-gooders worldwide, carrying out their reprehensible campaigns to place environmental and human concerns ahead of industry profits and supplant boardroom governance with democratic processes. Despite these considerable challenges, ExxonMobil continues to make history by preserving its brave legacy of petroleum exploration into the old-growth frontier forests of 22 countries, coral reefs in 38 countries, and mangroves in 46 countries. Beyond this we have helped pioneer the field of market friendly science and reinvigorated healthy government - industry relations around the world while helping to keep anti-free market forces at bay with all mean necessary.
